Investments to support a Grassroots Infrastructure to Win

WelcomeIntroductionBy the Numbers • Thanks to Our Donors Partners SpeakVictory Stories • Organizing Philanthropy Meet Our StaffFinancials

BIPOC youth and parent-led advocacy organizations are doing the critical work on the nation’s pathway to education justice. They are leading the local movements to improve education opportunities for students across the country. These organizations are at the core of maintaining and making our democracy work.

Despite having a proven track record of doing more with less, philanthropy continues to underfund these organizations while also funding them in ways that do not allow for sustainability, long term planning and increased effectiveness.

WE NEED TO ENSURE THAT ORGANIZATIONS ON THE GROUND HAVE THE INFRASTRUCTURE AND ACCESS TO THE RESOURCES NECESSARY TO SUSTAIN THEMSELVES AND MAKE OUR DEMOCRACY WORK IN PERPETUITY.

We invite you to join us. For more information on our EndowNow campaign, click here.

Racial Justice in Education Endowment Collaborative Fund

The Racial Justice in Education Endowment Collaborative Fund is the first fund of its kind to raise capital for endowments to ensure the sustainability of three BIPOC-led national education justice alliances. Schott’s $30 million endowment campaign will support three national education justice alliances that address racism and system-wide opportunity gaps. For more information click here.

MOVEMENTS FOR RACIAL JUSTICE IN EDUCATION ARE GROWING — BUT INVESTMENT IN THEM IS LAGGING.

Schott Foundation’s data project in collaboration with Candid, #JusticeIsTheFoundation, examines K-12 education philanthropy’s priorities: namely, where the grant dollars go. We have consistently found that racial equity and racial justice grantmaking is dramatically smaller than what is needed to have the impact on public education that so many funders have committed to, especially since 2020.

Education philanthropy has the opportunity today to step up to make the bold investments that youth, parents, and this moment demand of us. With each release of our action brief we provide next steps that funders can take to meet the challenge and make transformative investments in racial equity and justice.

James A. Joseph Lecture, Harambee, 2024

ABFE: A Philanthropic Partnership for Black Communities

Each year, the James A. Joseph Lecture and Award recognizes an outstanding individual whose visionary leadership and stewardship of progressive philanthropic ideals advance ABFE’s mission.

This year’s James A. Joseph Lecture and Award recipient is Schott’s President and CEO, Dr. John H. Jackson.

Here’s an excerpt from Dr. Jackson’s lecture:

President and CEO of the Schott Foundation Dr. John H. Jackson presenting at the 2023  James A. Jospeh Lecture with ABFE.

“Amid the movement for racial justice in the summer of 2020, Ambassador Joseph counseled us to ‘Do what you can do, wherever you are.’ “His life was the embodiment of that sentiment,” said Dr. Jackson. “When he was in Tuscaloosa, he organized against the Klan. When he was a university chaplain, he preached love, justice, and forgiveness. When he advised HBCUs, he worked for equity and opportunity. When he was Ambassador to South Africa, he joined the cause of racial justice and reconciliation.

In this urgent moment, when democracy is under attack, as philanthropic leaders we must do what we can do – namely, protect and continue to advance our core values of a multi-racial democracy–inclusion, equity, and fairness.”
