The Schott Foundation Names Dr. Cassie Schwerner Vice President of Programs

Cambridge, MA, Nov. 27, 2007 — The Schott Foundation for Public Education announces the promotion of Dr. Cassie Schwerner to Vice President of Programs. The Schott Foundation Receives $1 Million Grant from the Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation for Black Male Teacher Initiative

New York, NY, October 3, 2007 – The Schott Foundation for Public Education solidifies $1 million partnership with The Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation as a part of an initiative which will develop models for recruiting and retaining African American male teachers.   This first phase of the grant will be used to implement the Teachers as Leaders initiative — which will expand teacher and public policy leadership opportunities for black males entering the teaching profession.

The Schott Foundation for Public Education Announces That Dr. John H. Jackson Will Become Its New President

Cambridge, MA, May 21, 2007 — Today the Schott Foundation for Public Education announced that Dr. John H. Jackson, will become the Foundation’s new President as of July 2, 2007.  Dr. Jackson joins The Schott Foundation after seven productive years in leadership positions at the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He replaces former Schott President Rosa A. Smith, Ph.D. and plans to take the program successes she set in motion at Schott to the next level.

Three high schools will be honored for the high achievement of their African-American male students by The Schott Foundation for Public Education. Dr. Rosa A. Smith, President and CEO of The Schott Foundation for Public Education announced that Brush High School in the South Euclid-Lyndhurst school district, near Cleveland, Ohio; the Frederick Douglass Academy in New York City, and Elmont Memorial High School in the Sewanhaka school district, Nassau County, Long Island have been selected for the honor.

Smith has decided that next spring she will step down as President and CEO.   As she leaves Schott and enters a new place in her career and life’s work — with Schott support — she will take her nationally acclaimed Black boys work to its next level. She put it this way:  “The achievement results for the majority of black male students are at a crisis level and require the best thinking and practices available to us.”
