| The Schott Foundation for Public Education seeks to develop and strengthen a broad-based and representative movement to achieve fully-resourced, high quality pre-kindergarten to grade 12 public education.
Earlier this month, The Schott Foundation’s co-founder and board chair Greg Jobin-Leeds and board member Maria Jobin-Leeds received the Community Change Champion Award from the Center for Community Change at the organization's gala in Washington, DC. The award reminds us of the ongoing, diligent work of this husband and wife team. Along with countless other education and civil rights advocates, the Jobin-Leeds strive to help all underserved children attend great schools and all disenfranchised adults participate in the policy decisions that affect them. The untiring efforts of these advocates should encourage Mayor Bloomberg to protect and promote all children's right to learn by maintaining full education funding in New York City schools. In Massachusetts, state legislators should likewise be inspired and demonstrate their commitment to high quality education for all children by maintaining Governor Deval Patrick's funding requests to improve and expand Early Childhood Education programs. If elected officials showed the courage and commitment to go beyond what’s “politically feasible” to do what’s morally right, this nation could heal many of its social ills. Thanks Greg and Maria for being model advocates and change agents.

Boston, MA - Strategies for Children and the Rennie Center publish Case Study Examining the Evolution of the Department of Early Education and Care.
On July 1, 2005, Massachusetts became the first state in the nation to launch an independent department with a primary focus on early education and care. This case study seeks to chronicle the purpose, history and evolution of EEC, to articulate “lessons-learned” to date, and to identify future opportunities and challenges for the agency as it strives to meet its statutory mandates. The authors of the case study also hope that it provides guidance to other states seeking to develop an appropriate governance structure for the delivery of early education and care.

New York, NY - Keep The Promises! a broad coalition of New York organizations releases .
Last year the mayor and the City Council matched the historic commitment that the state made to reverse the multi-generational under-funding of the New York City public schools. It did this by agreeing to a $2.2 billion increase over four years. On May 1, 2008 the city broke that promise to kids when it cut the approximately $450 million it had authorized in the 2008 adopted budget. Formed by the Alliance for Quality Education (AQE), the Campaign for Fiscal Equity and a host of other NY organizations and parent groups, Keep The Promises! issued a strong response to this cut.
