Public schools are the heart of every community, a place where the next generation of doctors, engineers, writers and artists learn and grow. They are where parents, teachers and community members come together to support their children and invest in their futures.

New Report on Lack of Teacher Diversity in the U.S.

A new report by the Shanker Institute brings attention a major problem in education: while the percentage of students of color has been rising, the number of teachers of color has failed to keep up. For black educators, the situation is even worse. Over the past decade, the number of black educators has declined in all the cities surveyed in this study. In some places, like New Orleans and Washington, D.C., that drop has been huge.

The Boston Public Schools District has over 83% students of color, yet only 37% of its teachers are teachers of color. Building on the committment of district officials to cultivate teacher diversity, BPS must do more to achieve the goal of having a teaching force that reflects the students and citizens of Boston.

In this interconnected world all children, and particularly those who stand at the margins, need a diverse teaching force if they are going to be able to be competitive globally. I’m glad to report that a seemingly contentious hearing yielded a true partnership between Boston Public Schools, local community members, researchers, and myself and colleague City Councilor Ayanna Pressley to create and implement an accountability structure that ensures we recruit, support, and, most importantly, retain highly qualified teachers of color.

Improving School Climate by Supporting Great Teaching

As part of an ongoing series of reports on school climate, the Alliance for Excellent Education partnered with the Opportunity to Learn Campaign to produce a guide on how our nation, states and cities can recruit, train and support the best teachers and get one at the front of every classroom.

There are three things that every classroom and every school needs to foster a positive climate that supports students and helps them learn: a rigorous curriculum, a safe school environment, and well-prepared and effective teachers.
