Harsh discipline policies play a huge, negative role in our nation's schools by alienating students from the classroom and pushing them down the school-to-prison pipeline. The disparities in who gets punished and how severely are especially harsh for students of color and students with disabilities.
There is also a growing body of research showing that LGBTQ and gender nonconforming youth face particular challenges when it comes to school discipline. A new report from GSA Network and Crossroads Collaborative shows how these students face disparate discipline from school staff, higher levels of policing and surveillance and are often blamed for their own victimization.
No student, regardless of race, disability status or sexuality, should have their educational opportunities or potential curtailed because of an overly harsh and discriminatory discipline system. Check out some infographics from the report below and download the full report here. And don't miss these recommendations from GSA Network and the Advancement Project on how we can create a safe, supportive learning environment for all students.
