How do you turn a school bus into an organizing tool?
This is how:
A+NYC, a citywide coalition of community-based organizations in New York City, led a bus tour last week across the city to let community members make their voices heard in the education debate and inform mayoral candidates about the policy-oriented solutions to New York City's education crisis.
The inside of the big blue bus was transformed into a interactive exhibit showcasing the classes, programs and policies that work to build successful public schools. Importantly, the bus tour elevated the voices of parents, students and teachers who are usually left out of these conversations.
At bus stops across the city, members of the public were invited to get on the bus vote on which education initiatives policymakers should focus on. You can tell from the pictures that the exhibit included a wealth of options, ranging from expanded after-school learning opportunities and positive school climates to providing a college preparatory curriculum, small class sizes, equitable resources and highly trained teachers.
