The Black Male Donor Collaborative (BMDC) is seeking a senior level professional to manage an initiative aimed at improving educational outcomes for Black male students in the New York City area.
 
Black Male Donor Collaborative
The Black Male Donor Collaborative is a collaborative funding initiative that seeks to reduce the academic achievement gap and raise the academic performance, graduation rates, and college readiness of Black males in New York City. As a collaborative, the resources, skills, and experiences of the donor members can be leveraged to sustain systemic education reforms addressing this achievement gap. The Collaborative aims to be comprised of a broad base of foundation and corporate donors, as well as individual donors, and will jointly develop grant guidelines, bylaws, and make joint funding decisions.
 
The Black Male Donor Collaborative is an affiliate of the Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies Initiative, a multi-disciplinary community engagement initiative that addresses the crisis facing Black males.  This initiative is spearheaded by Sullivan & Cromwell, LLP and Goldman Sachs.  The overall initiative is divided into five working groups: Education; Early Childhood Education; High Potential Youth; Employment and Economic Development; and Criminal Justice Reform & Re-Entry. The Black Male Donor Collaborative is an outgrowth of the Winning Strategies Education Working Group.
 
The Collaborative will incorporate the following principles:

  • Minimum contribution level of $50,000;
  • One vote for each member;
  • The Collaborative will develop Grant Guidelines/Bylaws for making contributions to
  • support research and evaluation, program and policy advocacy;
  • The Collaborative will support projects that are solicited by the donor members and/or
  • through an RFP process;
  • The Collaborative will support projects that have systemic impact or can be taken to scale
  • in a public school or community-based organization;

Founding funders of the Collaborative include The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, The Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation, The Open Society Institute, the New York Community Trust, and The Schott Foundation for Public Education.

Program Director
The Program Director will ensure the effective operation of the Black Male Donor Collaborative. This position supports and reports to the Senior Vice President of Programs at the Schott Foundation’s New York City office.

Job Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in the field of fundraising and/or development;
  • A minimum of 5 years experience working in a non-profit environment preferable;
  • Graduate degree preferred, preferably in education, early childhood education, sociology, social work, public policy or a related field;
  • Exhibit an active passion for advocating for the elimination of social policies and practices that lead to racial/ethnic and gender disparities in educational outcomes and more broadly;
  • Experience working on Black male or males of color initiatives a plus;
  • Excellent technical writing, typing, oral communication, and research skills; this includes the ability to give compelling presentations to potential stakeholders and funders;
  • Ability to work well in a small office environment and with a diverse constituency, including leaders in community-based organizations, state and local government, institutions of higher education, and philanthropic organizations;
  • Ability to travel upon request.

Job Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the Program Director for the BMDC include but are not limited to:

  • Overseeing all fundraising, including assisting donor partners in fundraising efforts; and
  • submitting proposals and reports to members and prospective members;
  • Overseeing the grantmaking process, including drafting and disseminating RFPs to potential grantees, monitoring the grantees’ progress and reporting back to the Collaborative;
  • Coordinating regular communications and active engagement among Collaborative members through print, electronic and digital media as well as in-person events, including briefings for members and non-members;
  • Organizing, facilitating and convening donor meetings;
  • Developing the Collaborative’s communication and outreach tools;
  • Developing and implementing a strong and effective outreach strategy to engage the
  • business, legal and private sectors of New York City;
  • Identifying and documenting philanthropic and private sector initiatives focused on
  • improving educational outcomes among  Black male youth;
  • Providing staffing and support to the daily operations, planning and special events of the BMDC;
  • Managing the BMDC staff;
  • Coordinating with the Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies Director on Working Group initiatives, development and communications.
